Gas Engine Testing

Using an eddy current dynamometer, studies and tests were performed on the Suzuki GSXR 600 engine during the fall 2010 semester. This information is desired because this model engine is used in many Formula SAE entries at The Cooper Union. Studies included both steady state and transient engine characterization tests. Many types of software and data acquisition devices were implemented to produce the necessary analogue and digital controls and signals. The fuel consumption was calculated by measuring the Injector pulse-width and calculating the fuel flow rate. An emissions device was also incorporated and could record emissions data during testing. Examples of some important tests included the application of a constant throttle with a varying torque and the application of a various torque to maintain a constant speed as throttle is varied.
